The Salaf

The term "Salaf" refers to the first three generations of Muslims who have received praise in the revealed texts and have been made a source of authentic understanding of the religion of Islaam. They (the Salaf) constitute a criterion for the correct understanding and implementation of Islamic texts. A return to their way does not mean "living in the seventh century" but signifies the pursuit of authentic, sound religion in belief and practice. As for progress in science, industry and technology and all the ways and means which facilitate the well-being of mankind, then Islam encourages all of those ways and means.
